Case filed over procession by banned Awami League, affiliates in Ctg; ex-mayor Manjur Alam among 29 accused

Police have filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act over a procession organised by the banned Awami League and its affiliates in Chattogram's Fatikchhari upazila, naming 29 individuals, including former city mayor M Manjur Alam and former lawmaker Khadizatul Anwar Sony.
Another 80 to 90 unidentified individuals have also been named as accused in the case filed last night (5 June) by Fatikchhari Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Jamal Hossain.
Fatikchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Alam told The Business Standard, "Based on information obtained from the detained individuals and the findings of the investigation, others have also been included in the case."

According to police, leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League, Jubo League and Awami League held a procession on the Nazirhat-Maizbhandar road in the Maizbhandar area at around 10:30am on Thursday (4 June).
When police arrived at the scene after receiving information, the participants allegedly attempted to leave the area.
Two individuals, identified as Jaman Babu, 23, and Saiful Islam Sajib, 25, were detained.
Police also said four bamboo-made torches were seized from the spot.
Manjur Alam, named in the case, is a former mayor of Chattogram City Corporation. He was elected mayor in 2010 with BNP backing and has since remained a subject of discussion over various political positions and potential candidacies in subsequent elections. His name has also featured in recent national and local political discussions.
