UNDP, partners launch exhibition to amplify women’s climate leadership
A three-day photography exhibition, "Voice of Coastal Climate Resilience", opened in Dhaka on Thursday, spotlighting the leadership, resilience, and adaptation strategies of women in Bangladesh's climate-vulnerable coastal regions.
The exhibition was inaugurated at Drik Gallery, Level 2, DrikPath Bhobon, Panthapath, under the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Gender-responsive Coastal Adaptation (GCA) Project, supported by the Green Climate Fund and the Government of Bangladesh.
The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the lived experiences of coastal women confronting the impacts of climate change.
It features photographs illustrating how women in coastal communities are adapting to environmental challenges, including salinity intrusion, cyclones, river erosion, and livelihood insecurity.
Through visual storytelling, the exhibition highlights women's resilience, local initiatives, and leadership in strengthening community adaptation.
Organisers note that women's contributions to climate resilience are often underrepresented, despite their crucial role in supporting families and communities in disaster-prone areas.
The exhibition seeks to highlight the importance of women-led climate adaptation and inclusive, community-driven resilience efforts.
Shaikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Md Abdul Hye Al Mahmud, National Project Director (Additional Secretary) of the GCA Project under the Department of Women Affairs, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs; Sarder M Asaduzzaman, Assistant Resident Representative and Head of Resilience and Inclusive Growth Cluster, UNDP; and Md Abdul Quayyum, Head of Communication, UNDP Bangladesh, attended the inaugural ceremony, among others.
The exhibition will run until 23 May at Drik Gallery, Level 2, DrikPath Bhobon, 16 Sukrabad Road, Panthapath, Dhaka.
Visiting hours are from 3pm to 8pm daily.
The showcase features approximately 85 photographs by AB Rashid. In addition to the physical exhibition, a virtual platform is hosting the collection.
The Gender-responsive Coastal Adaptation Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme with support from the Green Climate Fund and the Government of Bangladesh, strengthens climate resilience and adaptive capacity in coastal communities, with a focus on women.
The project prioritises improving access to safe water, livelihoods, and adaptation capacity to address climate-induced salinity intrusion.
