What is Iran's strategic weapon beneath the Strait of Hormuz?
Iran is signaling a new form of geopolitical pressure in the Strait of Hormuz — this time targeting undersea internet cables instead of only oil routes. Tehran has hinted at imposing fees and tighter control over submarine cable infrastructure crossing its waters. These cables carry huge volumes of global internet traffic, financial transactions, cloud services, and sensitive communications linking Asia, Europe, and the Gulf region.
Experts warn that any disruption to these cables could slow banking systems, impact energy markets, and weaken regional internet connectivity. Although the affected routes carry less than 1% of global bandwidth, countries across the Middle East, India, and parts of Africa could still face major economic and digital disruptions if tensions escalate further.
