The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the prime accused in Sarhab Hossain murder case three years after the crime was committed.

The CID arrested Kabir Mia, who allegedly masterminded the murder, from Gazipur's Sreepur area on Friday, Deputy Inspector General of CID Mainul Islam told the media on Saturday.

Initially, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a charge-sheet in the murder case without arresting the prime accused, but the victim's family members rejected the charge sheet.

Then, following a court order, the CID took charge of investigation.

Sarhab Hossain was murdered in Khamarchor area in Narsingdi on October 12, 2017. Later, the victim's mother Rina Begum filed a case against 11 people including Kabir.

Mainul Islam said, "After eight months of investigation we were able to arrest the prime accused in the case. Besides, we identified three others who were involved in the murder."

After arresting Kabir, the CID learnt that he is a notorious criminal. There are three cases, including two murder cases, against Kabir.

Mainul Islam said after killing Sarhab, Kabir fled the village. He started introducing himself as Shamol and has been working as a truck driver in Gazipur area.

According to the deputy inspector general of the CID, the Police Headquarters put the PBI in charge of investigating the case while Bela police station was investigating it. After investigation, the PBI submitted a charge-sheet against five persons including Kabir.

Kabir's motive for killing Sarhab

According to case statement, Kabir was angry with Rina Begum, a member of Bela Union Parishad, over a land dispute and establishing domination in the area.

Besides, police tried to arrest him and his associates in connection with an incident of recovering a woman's dead body from Khamarchor area.

Kabir blamed Rina when police tried to arrest him in connection with the case, as she started to take care of a new born baby that was found beside the dead body. Then he allegedly planned to kill her son Farid to take revenge.

Learning Kabir's plan, Rina sent Farid to Cox's Bazar.

When Kabir found Sarhab in their house, instead of Farid, he and his associates picked him up and allegedly killed him brutally.

Mainul Islam said Kabir and Rina are neighbours.

Rina Begum claimed to The Business Standard that the PBI submitted a partial charge-sheet.

"Investigators of the PBI involved two innocent boys. On the other hand they eliminated some accused from the case. This is why I rejected the charge sheet," she added.
