Fake US company offer letter used to swindle Tk3.83 lakh from job seeker; 1 arrested
The victim was allegedly lured by a Facebook page advertising jobs in the US under different visa categories and later received a fake job offer letter.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a suspected member of a fraud ring for allegedly swindling Tk3,83,810 from a job seeker after luring the victim with a Facebook job advertisement for jobs in the US and later sending a fake offer letter.
The arrestee is Tanvir Hasan, 28.
CID Special Superintendent (Media) Sufi Ullah said Tanvir was arrested during a raid in the Azampur area of the capital under Dakshinkhan Police Station in the early hours of today (1 October).
He also said a private-sector employee came across a Facebook page on 9 August 2025, advertising jobs in the US under various visa categories.
Interested in the offers, the victim contacted a foreign mobile number listed on the page through WhatsApp.
At one point, a member of the alleged fraud ring sent the victim a job offer letter from a US company and took a total of Tk3,83,810 through several Bangladeshi bank accounts and mobile financial service (MFS) numbers.
The scammers later demanded more money, but the victim refused to pay. They then allegedly became angry and threatened and intimidated the victim.
The victim later realised that he had been defrauded and filed a case with Tejgaon Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Sufi Ullah said CID investigators later arrested Tanvir in connection with the case.
During interrogation, Tanvir admitted his involvement in the incident, he said.
Tanvir was later sent to court, he added.
