Case filed over abduction, attempted murder of 8-year-old girl raped, throat slit
She underwent surgery today and was placed in the hospital’s One-Stop Crisis Cell for further treatment
A case has been registered with the police on charges of abduction and attempted murder in connection with an eight-year-old girl, who was rescued from the Botanical Garden and Eco-Park of Sitakunda in Chattogram after her windpipe was severed in what police described as a knife attack.
Following the incident yesterday (1 March), the child's mother filed a case with Sitakunda Police Station, confirmed Officer-in-Charge Mohinul Islam saying that a case has been recorded against unidentified individuals.
Initially, police identified the girl as a seven-year-old and quoting locals, said she was raped and later attacked in an attempt to kill her. According to police, the girl's throat was slit after rape.
Locals rescued her and took her to the Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex where hospital authorities conducted a primary investigation and said she was gang-raped.
She was later admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and while under care in the hospital's Ear, Nose and Throat department, she underwent surgery that same night.
Hospital Director Brig Gen Mohammad Taslim Uddin said the surgery was successful and that today, she has been placed in the hospital's One-Stop Crisis Cell (OCC) for further treatment and observation.
According to police and local sources, around 10:00am on Sunday, the child was found lying beside a hilly trail about 500 metres north of the Sahasradhara waterfall area inside the Eco-Park, with her throat slit.
Workers engaged in road repair at the site rescued her. To stop the bleeding, they pressed cloth against her neck and rushed her to the hospital.
Family members said the girl went missing after leaving home in the morning.
How she reached the remote hilly area remains unknown. As she is unable to speak, detailed information about the incident could not yet be obtained.
Police, therefore, said an investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the attack.
The family has demanded a proper investigation and swift justice for the perpetrators.
