State-owned Agrani Bank has reduced its volume of defaulted loans by Tk3,584 crore in 2025 as part of a broader push by all public sector banks to rein in non-performing assets.
The reduction helped the bank lower its defaulted loan ratio by nearly five percentage points, the bank's Managing Director Md Anwarul Islam told reporters yesterday.
He said Agrani Bank's total defaulted loans stood at Tk32,002 crore – 40.49% of its total loans – at the end of 2024. By the end of 2025, the figure had fallen to Tk28,616 crore, equivalent to 35.52%.
"After I joined as managing director, we took a number of initiatives to reduce defaulted loans," Anwarul said. "We are seeing the benefits of those steps. Still, we need to reduce defaults further.
"We have set a target to bring defaulted loans below 20% by 2026."
According to Agrani Bank data, deposits stood at Tk99,232 crore at the end of December 2024. By the end of 2025, deposits had risen to Tk113,064 crore – an increase of Tk13,832 crore in a year.
During the same period, the bank's total loans increased by Tk1,536 crore to Tk80,573 crore.
Agrani Bank posted its highest operating profit in its history last year, largely driven by stronger recovery from defaulted loans.
The bank's operating profit reached Tk2,502 crore in 2025, up by Tk991 crore from the previous year. In 2024, operating profit stood at Tk1,511 crore.
Loan recovery from defaulters rose sharply to Tk10,234 crore last year, compared with Tk1,726 crore in 2024 – an increase of Tk8,508 crore in a single year.
Breaking down the figures, the managing director said Tk1,009 crore was recovered in cash from defaulted loans, Tk8,368 crore through rescheduling, and Tk936 crore from written-off loans.
"For this year, we have set a combined recovery target of Tk12,200 crore," Anwarul said. "We hope to be able to achieve this target."
Agrani Bank also saw a sharp rise in remittance inflows. In 2025, the bank collected Tk33,961 crore in remittances, up by Tk12,928 crore from the previous year. In 2024, remittances through the bank amounted to Tk21,033 crore.
Imports handled by the bank rose as well, reaching Tk54,367 crore in 2025 – Tk3,779 crore more than in 2024, when imports stood at Tk50,588 crore.
However, exports through Agrani Bank declined last year. In 2025, exports amounted to Tk13,252 crore, which was Tk862 crore less than the figure recorded in 2024.
