Election: 451 centers marked high-risk, 18,300 security personnel deployed in Sunamganj
Police will use body cameras and around 18,300 personnel from the army, BGB, police, RAB, and Ansar
Tension and political excitement are high in haor-dominated Sunamganj ahead of the national election, prompting authorities to take extensive security measures across the district's five constituencies.
Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia said, "We are committed to a free and fair election, with maximum security so voters can cast their votes without fear."
Sunamganj has 664 polling centers and 4,250 booths, with 451 high-risk centers, all monitored via CCTV for the first time, while police will use body cameras and around 18,300 personnel from the army, BGB, police, RAB, and Ansar—including 3,500 police, 12,000 Ansar, 1,100 army, and 24 BGB platoons across 12 upazilas—have been deployed for border and internal security.
SP ABM Zakir Hossain said that intelligence monitoring has been intensified and mobile patrols will remain active to prevent disturbances.
The election sees a multi-party contest with strong independent candidates, notably in Sunamganj-4, where expelled BNP leader Dewan Zainul Zakerin is running independently, and Sunamganj-3, where some religious leaders hold influence.
