Flood threat in Sunamganj, farmers urged to harvest Boro paddy quickly
The notice, signed by Executive Engineer Mamun Hawlader, urged farmers to immediately harvest paddy from fields where at least 80% of the crop has matured.
The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said that continuous rainfall in upstream regions has caused water levels in major rivers, including the Surma River, Kushiyara River, and Baulai River, to rise rapidly.
In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, the Sunamganj office of BWDB warned that a flood situation could develop at any time.
The notice, signed by Executive Engineer Mamun Hawlader, urged farmers to immediately harvest paddy from fields where at least 80% of the crop has matured. Water levels are expected to continue to increase over the next week, raising fears of an early flood.
According to observations from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and BWDB, increased rainfall in upstream basins is steadily raising river levels.
Mamun Hawlader noted that river levels have already started to rise and warned that further rainfall in upstream hilly areas could worsen the situation quickly.
He also instructed relevant authorities to assist farmers by arranging labour and supplying harvesting machines to accelerate the process.
According to Omar Faruk, deputy director of the Sunamganj Agricultural Extension Department, the district has 137 haors.
This year, boro paddy has been cultivated on 223,511 hectares of land. So far, only 28,000 hectares have been harvested, and it will take more time to complete the remaining harvest.
