National polls: Rallies, processions banned in Ctg from 10–14 Feb; violators face 2–7 years in jail

The Chattogram district administration has imposed a ban on rallies, processions and demonstrations for five days surrounding the 13th national parliamentary election and referendum, warning that violators may face two to seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with fines.
The restriction will be in force from 7:30am on 10 February to 4:30pm on 14 February, covering the 48 hours before the start of voting and 48 hours after polling ends.
The directive was issued through a notice signed by Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian yesterday (4 February). Chattogram Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Md Shorif Uddin confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
In addition to banning rallies, marches and motorcades, the notice also prohibits any aggressive or disorderly behaviour during the period. It stated that no individual may threaten or intimidate voters, election officials or personnel engaged in election-related duties, nor display or use weapons or force.
The administration said the restrictions have been imposed under Article 78 of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, in the interest of maintaining law and order and ensuring a free and fair election.
According to the notice, voting in the 13th national parliamentary election will begin at 7:30am on 12 February and conclude at 4:30pm the same day in the concerned constituencies.
The ban applies to the electoral areas under Chattogram-1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 constituencies.
