'Hacking' of Jamaat chief's X account: 'Sufficient evidence' found against arrested Bangabhaban official, says DB
"In the interest of a fair investigation, Shafiqur Rahman’s mobile phone will also be sent for forensic analysis," DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam says.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has claimed it has found "sufficient evidence" against a Bangabhaban official arrested in connection with the hacking of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman's X (formerly Twitter) account.
Speaking at an emergency press briefing at the DMP Media Centre last night (4 February), DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam said, "Investigators have collected enough preliminary evidence against Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, who was arrested over the incident."
"The mobile phone and computer seized from the accused have been sent to a forensic laboratory for detailed examination," the officer said, adding that in the interest of a fair investigation, Shafiqur Rahman's mobile phone would also be sent for forensic analysis.
Responding to questions about the arrest of a government official, Shafiqul Islam said Sarwar was detained with prior permission from the President's Office.
Sarwar-e-Alam, an official of Bangabhaban, was detained in the early hours of Tuesday (4 February) from a government quarters adjacent to the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium. He was later taken to the DB office for questioning over allegations that Shafiqur Rahman's device was accessed and used to post controversial content from his verified X account.
A case has already been filed over the alleged hacking incident, and Sarwar-e-Alam was subsequently shown arrested in the case, according to DB.
Earlier, speaking to The Business Standard, Shafiqul Islam had said that Sarwar-e-Alam's seized devices were being examined and that no final conclusion had been reached at that stage. Investigators had also initially said no direct evidence linking his devices to the hacking had been found.
Sarwar-e-Alam is a resident of Cumilla and lives with his wife and two children in a flat in the hospital zone of the AGP Colony in Dhaka. Following the police operation, his family members reportedly left for their village.
Shafiqur Rahman's X account was allegedly hacked on 31 January.
