Country will lose identity if 1971 is erased: Fakhrul
"The independence of 1971 is our existence, but a vested quarter wants to erase it," he said.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (3 February) said the independence of 1971 is the nation's very existence, warning that if it is obliterated, the country will lose its identity.
"The independence of 1971 is our existence, but a vested quarter wants to erase it," he said while addressing an electoral campaign at noon.
The programme was organised by the Thakurgaon Municipality Ward-6 unit of BNP.
Fakhrul further said that 1971 gave the nation a new country and a new homeland. "It opened vast opportunities before the people, enabling them to move forward and build a beautiful future for their children."
"But unfortunately, a group wants to push '71 behind," he said, adding that it represents the core of the nation's existence and that the country must move forward with that spirit.
The BNP leader alleged that a particular quarter is misleading people by exploiting religion and spreading false propaganda, which may make it difficult for voters to exercise their voting rights properly.
Referring to the national election, Mirza Fakhrul said polls are held every five years, but a vote is a "trust" that should not be wasted.
"It is important that those elected by the people protect that trust properly," he told the rally.
