High Court Justice Mamnoon Rahman steps down from Canada
He has been absent from judicial duties for more than a year without leave following the political changeover in the country on 5 August 2024.
High Court (HC) Division Justice Mamnoon Rahman today has submitted his resignation to the President, citing personal grounds, Supreme Court (SC) sources said.
The resignation letter, sent through the Chief Justice, was received via email by the SC Registrar General and the Ministry of Law on 2 February.
He personally emailed the letter from Canada, according to officials.
Justice Mamnoon has been absent from judicial duties for more than a year without leave following the political changeover in the country on 5 August 2024.
His unauthorised absence prompted the Supreme Judicial Council to recently submit a report to the President, seeking action against him.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, twelve judges of the HC Division were placed on leave. Of them, nine are no longer serving as some were sent into forced retirement following SJC investigations, others resigned voluntarily, and several retired naturally.
Three of the remaining justices remain in office but have not been assigned to benches or judicial responsibilities.
Moreover, HC Justice MR Hasan was sent on leave after complaints were filed against him with the SJC.
