International Maritime Academy holds passing-out ceremony of 14th batch
The passing out ceremony of the 14th batch of pre-sea cadets of the International Maritime Academy was held with due ceremony at its campus in Pubail.
A total of 79 cadets from the nautical and engineering divisions successfully completed their training this year.
The International Maritime Academy is the first permanent private sector maritime training institution in Bangladesh. The academy held the passing out ceremony of its first batch on 1 March 2010. Since then, 13 batches of cadets and nine batches of ratings have passed out from the academy. At present, 70 cadets of the 15th batch and 29 ratings of the 10th batch are undergoing training.
Training at the academy is conducted in line with the syllabus approved by the Department of Shipping and Bangladesh Maritime University. Upon completion of the two-year training programme, cadets will join foreign-going vessels as trainee officers under reputed foreign-flag shipping companies managed by Haque and Sons Ltd. They will receive remuneration in line with international standards.
Md Muhidul Islam, additional secretary (development) of the Ministry of Shipping, attended the programme as the chief guest. The ceremony was also attended by representatives from foreign shipping and manning companies, along with local dignitaries and officials from the maritime administration.
In his welcome address, Zaki Ahad, captain and commandant of the academy, highlighted the institution's progress in strengthening maritime education and training in the private sector. He also briefed the audience on the academy's training facilities.
The ceremony featured a ceremonial march past by the cadets, followed by an oath taking session.
The gold medal for overall best performance was awarded to Cadet Md Fahim Foysal. Cadet Sheikh Tasbeh Kabir Sampad received the silver medal as the best nautical cadet, while Cadet Md Tanvirul Islam received the silver medal as the best engineering cadet.
In addition, scholarship cheques were awarded by the managing director of the academy, amounting to Tk2,00,000 for overall best performance and Tk1,00,000 each for the best nautical and engineering cadets.
The passing out ceremony concluded with a slow march past by the cadets, in keeping with merchant marine tradition. A vote of thanks was delivered by Subrata Kumar Saha, captain and deputy commandant of the International Maritime Academy.
