Journalists seek unhindered access to Supreme Court courtrooms
The Law Reporters Forum (LRF), an organisation of journalists covering the Supreme Court, has written to Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury seeking assurance of unhindered access to courtrooms for news coverage.
In a press release, the LRF said the letter, signed by its President, Hasan Javed and General Secretary, Moniruzzaman Mission, was submitted to the chief justice today (29 January) through the registrar general. The organisation noted that a similar application was made on 19 January, but the issue remains unresolved.
According to the LRF, journalists have been barred from entering the Appellate Division's courtroom without prior notice since 7 January, with court staff restricting access during proceedings. The forum said this hampers accurate reporting of constitutionally significant and public-interest cases.
The letter cited constitutional provisions guaranteeing open trials and press freedom, and stressed the media's watchdog role in informing the public about key judicial decisions.
