Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday claimed that Jubo League leader GK Shamim used to pay Tk1 crore every month to acting BNP chief Tarique Rahman, a fugitive, who is now in self-imposed exile in London.

Referring to some news items surfaced on social media and some online news portals, he also alleged that many other BNP leaders used to receive money from Shamim.

He made the remarks while talking to journalists at Rajshahi Circuit House in the afternoon.

The information minister said the government is taking action against the persons responsible for running the casino business, irrespective of their political affiliation.

Prime Minister's Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam and Hasan Mahmud were visiting Rajshahi to attend a programme organised by Awami League at Shilpakala Academy. Prior to joining the event, they talked to journalists.

The minister said the casino business began in the country during the BNP regime.

BNP leaders Mirza Abbas, Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Mosaddek Ali Falu developed this business, he alleged.

HT Imam said six of the seven persons, whose names have so far been surfaced in connection with the casino business, were patronised by BNP leaders.

They infiltrated Awami League from BNP and its associate bodies, he alleged.
