Police submit probe report against 26 over attack on Mirza Fakhrul's motorcade in Ctg
Earlier, on 11 January, the court had directed police to submit the investigation report without delay.
Police have submitted an investigation report to a Chattogram court against 26 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate organisations in connection with the attack on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's motorcade in Rangunia in 2017.
Rangunia police placed the report yesterday (27 January) before the Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Court, confirmed Md Arman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rangunia Police Station.
Earlier, on 11 January, the court had directed police to submit the investigation report without delay.
According to the report, the accused include Rangunia upazila Jubo League president Shamsuzzoha Sikdar, its general secretary Md Yunus, Rangunia upazila Chhatra League general secretary Shimul Gupta, Chattogram North district Chhatra League general secretary Abu Tayyab, and Rangunia upazila Awami League organising secretary Jahangir Alam.
The report also names 21 other leaders and activists affiliated with the Awami League and its associate bodies.
Case complainant Enamul Haque, former president of the Chattogram District Bar Association, said the court had earlier issued reminders as police failed to submit the report for a long time.
"After that, the police submitted the report against 26 accused. On the next scheduled date, the court will issue arrest warrants against the absconding accused, and the trial proceedings will begin," he said.
The incident took place on 18 June 2017, when a BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul was travelling through Rangunia on the Kaptai Road towards Rangamati to visit areas affected by a deadly landslide. The landslide in Rangamati had claimed 115 lives.
At the Ichhakhali area of Rangunia, the delegation's motorcade was allegedly attacked by some individuals with iron rods and sharp weapons.
Mirza Fakhrul, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and BNP Chattogram divisional organising secretary Mahbubur Rahman were among those injured.
Following the attack, the delegation returned to Chattogram city without proceeding to Rangamati.
After the incident, BNP leaders at a press conference accused former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, the then lawmaker from the area, of involvement in the attack. Hasan Mahmud denied the allegations at the time.
Enamul Haque filed the case on 21 June 2017, naming 26 leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League.
Although police initially informed the court that the incident was true, but no one could be identified as involved, the court later ordered a fresh investigation following a revision petition filed by the complainant.
