Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, among 10 allied parties have reached a seat-sharing agreement for 250 parliamentary constituencies, keeping 50 seats reserved for Islami Andolan Bangladesh, according to sources.
A central leader of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, speaking to The Business Standard on condition of anonymity, said that an emergency meeting held at Jamaat's central office today (15 January) finalised the electoral arrangement for 250 seats among the 10 parties, excluding Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
According to the leader, a press conference is scheduled to be held at 8pm tonight at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, in the capital, where the Jamaat-led alliance is expected to formally announce its final list of candidates for those 250 constituencies.
The remaining 50 seats have been kept aside for Islami Andolan Bangladesh, he said.
Although Islami Andolan Bangladesh has reportedly demanded a minimum of 70 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies are continuing efforts to keep the party within the alliance, the leader added.
According to meeting sources, an agreement has been reached regarding 26-27 seats for the National Citizen Party (NCP).
However, none of the parties has given any official statement on these issues.
Meanwhile, Islami Andolan Bangladesh said in a statement to the media that conditions are not yet in place to make a final announcement regarding the seat-sharing arrangement.
The party noted that multidimensional and multiparty discussions are still ongoing.
The statement added that Islami Andolan Bangladesh and other parties concerned would formally inform the nation once a final decision is reached.
Sources said the meeting is being attended by Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque, NCP Convener Nahid Islam, Bangladesh Development Party Chairman Anwarul Islam Chan, AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju, and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Secretary General Ahmad Abdul Qader, among other senior leaders.
