Schoolgirl found dead in Dhaka’s Banasree
According to police, the body was recovered from a house located at Block L, on the main road of South Banasree after locals informed law enforcement authorities.
A 17-year-old schoolgirl was found brutally murdered with her throat slit at her residence in the capital's South Banasree area yesterday afternoon (10 January).
The deceased, Fatema Akter Nili, was a class 10 student and the daughter of Sajib Mia, from Lakhai Upazila in Habiganj. The family resided in a rented flat at a house named 'Pritom Villa' on the South Banasree main road.
Khilgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shafikul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that the murder likely took place between 1:30pm and 3:30pm. "Preliminary findings suggest this was a murder.
According to the victim's elder sister, Shobha, the siblings were alone in the house as their parents had travelled to their village home on 7 January to settle a land-related dispute. The family also operates a local hotel business.
Shobha recounted the moment she discovered the body after returning home from the gym.
"I found the front door open and the entire house ransacked. I eventually found my sister's body huddled under a large kitchen vessel. At first, I thought she had been hit on the head, but when I removed her hijab, I saw a rope tied around her neck and her throat had been slit with a cleaver," she said.
Shobha further alleged that despite her cries for help, neither the house owner nor the neighbours came forward to assist her. She eventually took Nili to Farazy Hospital with the help of a friend, where doctors pronounced her dead.
The sister has raised suspicions regarding Milon, an employee at their hotel. Shobha mentioned a recent altercation between the victim and the employee.
"On Thursday night (8 January), Milon came to the house to collect his food, and Nili had a bit of an argument with him. Milon came to the house again yesterday afternoon while I was at the gym. We suspect he might be involved," she told reporters.
A cleaver (boti), believed to have been used in the killing, was recovered from the scene. Police have launched an investigation, focusing on the possible involvement of their hotel employee Milon.
OC Shafikul Islam said that while the exact motive remains unclear, police are investigating all possible angles, including the allegations against the hotel employee.
