Inqilab Mancha threatens movement to topple govt if justice in Hadi murder not delivered in 30 days
The ultimatum was announced from a Shahbagh sit-in following a Dhaka University march
Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber today (2 January) announced that the platform will start a movement to topple the government if justice is not delivered in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi within 30 working days.
He said the government had asked for time until 7 January, while Inqilab Mancha had given 30 working days.
"There are 22 working days left. We are moving forward based on working days. If the government fails to complete the justice process in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi within this time, we will begin a movement to topple the government after the deadline," he said during a sit-in protest programme at Shahbagh in the capital.
Abdullah Al Jaber said that by 7 January, not only those who carried out the murder but also those behind it must be identified and charge sheets submitted against all of them.
He said Osman Hadi had started a movement to protect Bangladesh's independence and seek justice. As a result, many believed that if Hadi was not killed immediately, they would not be able to come to power later.
"Many thought serving Delhi would not be possible. All these issues were linked together, and then Hadi was killed," he said.
Referring to plans to seek justice in the Hadi murder, Jaber said they would approach political parties from tomorrow.
"We will go to those who stand for Bangladesh. We will not go to those who serve India. We will go to cultural organisations that stand for Bangladesh and seek their support. If they support us, Alhamdulillah. If not, we will remain on the streets," he said.
Earlier today, after Jumma prayers, Inqilab Mancha marched from the Dhaka University central mosque and staged a sit-in programme at Shahbagh around 1:45pm. Traffic at the Shahbagh intersection was partially disrupted. The programme ended around 5:30pm.
During the programme, protesters chanted slogans including "Who are you, who am I? Hadi, Hadi," "One Hadi has died; thousands of Hadis are in every home," "Catch League members, put them in jail," "Delhi or Dhaka? Dhaka, Dhaka," and "India or Bangladesh? Bangladesh, Bangladesh."
Osman Hadi, also a prospective candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on 12 December while travelling in a rickshaw on Culvert Road in Purana Paltan.
He was later airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of 18 December.
On 20 December, he was laid to rest beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Dhaka University.
