A court has ordered the commencement of trial proceedings in the murder case of Chattogram-based lawyer Saiful Islam Alif by transferring the case to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court.
The order was issued this afternoon (23 December) by Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakkar Siddique, paving the way for formal trial proceedings. Court sources said the case is now ready for trial after completion of the required legal procedures against the absconding accused.
Assistant Public Prosecutor of the Chattogram Metropolitan Court, Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, said the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court would conduct the trial either directly or assign it to another designated court.
During today's hearing, the plaintiff in the case and father of the deceased lawyer, Jamal Uddin, was present in court.
Earlier, on 1 July, the investigating officer of the case and Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), Mahfuzur Rahman, submitted a charge sheet against 39 accused.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who is also an accused in a sedition case, was named as the prime accused. The court accepted the charge sheet on 25 August. Of the 39 charge-sheeted accused, 17 remain absconding, according to prosecution officials.
The murder took place on 26 November 2024, following unrest at the Chattogram court premises after bail was denied to Chinmoy Krishna Das in a sedition case. Protests erupted, and clashes broke out when police used sound grenades to disperse demonstrators. During the ensuing violence, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked and beaten to death on a road adjacent to the Rangam Convention Hall.
