Protesters block Dhaka-Aricha highway for 2hrs over Osman Hadi's death
At around 1:45am, the blockade was lifted
Local student-people and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) had blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar early today (19 December), following news of the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson for political platform Inqilab Mancha.
The protesters, demanding the immediate resignation of the home adviser, set fire to tires on both lanes of the highway, bringing traffic to a complete standstill and causing immense suffering for commuters.
The demonstration began at around 11:30pm last night (18 December) when hundreds of NCP activists and local residents gathered at the Pakeeza crossing. By 11:50pm, the situation escalated as the protesters moved onto the main road and ignited tires, leaving long queues of vehicles stretching several kilometres on both sides of the highway.
According to witnesses, the blockade was briefly lifted for ten minutes at 12:40am today but was re-established at 1am as more people joined the protest. At around 1:45am, the blockade was lifted.
The protesters chanted slogans against the interim government's failure to provide security to political activists. They alleged that the death of Osman Hadi, who was shot during an election campaign event in Dhaka on 12 December, was a result of administrative negligence.
