Philip helped Hadi's shooter Faisal escape to India: Two arrestees tell court
The Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam’s court granted a three-day remand for each of the accused
Alleged human trafficker Philip Snal assisted Faisal Karim Masud alias Daud Khan – the prime accused in the assassination attempt on Sharif Osman Bin Hadi – to flee illegally to India, two accused, who were allegedly involved in facilitating cross-border movement, told a Dhaka court today (18 December).
The two accused – Sibion Diu and Sanjay Chisim – made the claim during their remand hearing after being arrested in connection with the case.
The investigation officer, Faisal Ahmed, an inspector at the Motijheel zonal team of the Detective Branch (DB), produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand for further interrogation.
After hearing the petition, the Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam's court granted a three-day remand for each of the accused.
In his remand application, the investigation officer said that information gathered so far indicates that the two accused acted as an accomplice of Faisal in the crime.
"The accused assisted him in escaping the country. For a proper and impartial investigation, it is necessary to keep them in custody for seven days for interrogation," he told the court.
Supporting the remand plea, Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi said the two accused hail from Haluaghat in Sherpur and are nephews of former Awami League MP Jewel Areng.
"Evidence has emerged showing their involvement in helping Faisal flee. We are seeking a seven-day remand," he said.
No defence lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing.
Earlier, on 15 December, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said joint forces conducted a joint operation in the border areas to catch Philip Snal.
However, Philip could not be detained during the operation, BGB Sector Commander Colonel Sarkar Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman said at a press briefing in Mymensingh.
