Amjanatar Dal leader Tarek continues hunger strike, Gono Odhikar Parishad expresses solidarity
Failing to obtain registration as a new political party, Md Tarek Rahman, member secretary of Amjanatar Dal, started a hunger strike unto death in front of the Election Commission (EC) building in Dhaka yesterday
Amjanatar Dal's Member Secretary Md Tarek Rahman is continueing his hunger strike in front of the Election Commission (EC) headquarters since yesterday (4 November) afternoon, demanding official party registration.
Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan has expressed solidarity with him today (5 November), saying, "Tarek Rahman's movement is justified. His party, Amjanatar Dal, must be granted registration. He has been protesting alone for nearly 20 hours in front of the EC gate, demanding a fair decision."
The EC recently issued a notification granting registration to three new parties — the National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), and Bangladesh Am Janagan Party — ahead of the 13th national election. However, 19 other parties, including Amjanatar Dal, were denied registration in the final phase.
While speaking to journalists at Agargaon today, Rashed Khan questioned the EC's selection process, alleging that registration was given to inactive parties while denying active ones like Amjanatar Dal. He also raised concerns over the EC's transparency after it granted registration to the Bangladesh Am Janagan Party, reportedly founded by Destiny Group's Managing Director Mohammad Rafiqul Amin.
After meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, Rashed said the CEC assured him that Tarek Rahman's issue would be placed at the next EC meeting for discussion.
He also urged the commission not to allow the Awami League, Jatiya Party, or 14-party allies to dominate the polls, warning that their participation could lead to violence and undermine the upcoming national election.

Tarek took position in front of the main gate of the EC building in Agargaon around 4pm, holding a placard that read "Hunger strike unto death demanding registration."
