CUFL shuts down again just 12 hours after reopening following seven-month closure
Repair work currently underway
Chattogram's state-owned Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL), located in Anwara, has been forced to halt production again only 12 hours after resuming operations following a closure of seven months, due to mechanical issues.
"The urea and ammonia plants were restarted at 3:35am today [2 November]. But due to mechanical problems, the urea plant stopped at 5:50am and the ammonia plant followed around 2:45pm," CUFL's Chief Chemist and Head of Technical Services, Rupshankar Chowdhury, told The Business Standard.
He added that repair work is currently underway.
The CUFL authorities said gas supply to the plant had been suspended by the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) on 11 April, forcing a production halt.
Established in 1987, CUFL is one of Bangladesh's key urea fertiliser production facilities. However, it has faced repeated production suspensions in recent years due to gas shortages and technical complications.
