Bangladesh shines with first gold at world astronomy olympiad

Bangladeshi students earned unprecedented distinction for the country by securing four medals—including its first gold—and one honourable mention at the 4th Open World Astronomy Olympiad in Sochi, Russia.
The Bangladesh Astronomical Association (BAA) organised a reception at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro in Dhaka to honour the winners, who shared their experiences and were encouraged to strive for even greater achievements in science and research.
Md Makhdum Amin Fahim, a Year 10 student from Jessore Police Lines Secondary School, won gold. Saptarshi Rahman, an A-Level student at HEED International School, and Md Radit Raiyan, a Year 12 student at Adamjee Cantonment College, earned silver medals. Md Jubair Hossain Jisan, a Year 8 student at Rajshahi Collegiate School, took bronze, while Sayantan Roy, a Year 9 student at South Herald English School, Khulna, received an honourable mention.
The six-member Bangladeshi team was led by Mashhurul Amin, Chairman of the Bangladesh Astro-Olympiad National Committee.
The Olympiad, co-hosted by the Russian Ministry of Education and the Sirius Education Centre, took place from September 21 to 27 at the Sirius Conference Centre in Sochi, attracting 90 competitors from 20 countries.
"This year, one of our team members won gold, and all others received recognition. It is a landmark achievement, but this is just the beginning," said Mashhurul Amin. "We want these medallists to pursue higher studies in astronomy and contribute to national development. The Astronomical Association will support them on their journey."
Shahpar Alam, Director of the Bangladesh Astro-Olympiad National Committee, stated: "Our talented students have elevated Bangladesh's profile internationally. Their accomplishments will inspire the next generation to engage deeply with science."
The event was also attended by Robin Fakir, Director (Academic) and Coordinator of the National Committee for the Astro-Olympiad, as well as the proud parents of the medalists.
