NU to work with CUNY on climate, AI and data projects

National University (NU) will collaborate with the City University of New York (CUNY) and the City College of New York (CCNY) on research and academic initiatives in artificial intelligence, big data analytics, climate change, remote sensing and waste management.
The partnership will also include online training programmes, joint degree initiatives, collaborative research, and exposure visits for students, teachers and officials.
During a recent visit to the United States, NU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah met CCNY President Vincent Boudreau to discuss the partnership. Senior officials, including deans of the college, were present at the meeting.
Professor Amanullah said the initiative would create research opportunities in geography, environmental science, public health, as well as in the sciences, commerce and social science faculties.
Appreciating CCNY's interest in Bangladesh's higher education sector, he noted that the collaboration would benefit not only NU but also other institutions in the country. He stressed that higher education requires significant investment, which cannot be borne by the government alone, and alumni can play a crucial role in supporting institutions.
He cited the example of CCNY alumni who raised nearly $2 billion (Tk25,000 crore) to renovate its physics laboratory, which now facilitates photon research.
The NU vice-chancellor also mentioned that numerous NU alumni are serving in key positions across the world. To bring them together, NU has initiated the formation of an alumni association, expected to be launched soon, which he hopes will play a significant role in advancing higher education in Bangladesh.
