Mobs won’t gain edge during polls as they’ll be scattered across 300 seats, CEC tells US envoy
CEC Nasir has expressed confidence that the Election Commission would be able to maintain law and order during the upcoming polls
Those attempting to incite mob violence will not gain any advantage in the upcoming national polls, as they will be scattered across 300 constituencies, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasiruddin said today (1 September).
"Polls will be held simultaneously in all 300 constituencies, potential mob creators would be dispersed to their respective areas. They will no longer be able to gather in one place. Dhaka city will be empty, and those trying to form mobs will not be able to gain any advantage," he said in response to a question from US Embassy Charge d'Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson about the risk of mob violence.
Jacobson entered the CEC's room at around 2:20pm with a three-member delegation. The meeting lasted for nearly an hour, and no other Election Commission official was present during the discussion.
Following the meeting, CEC Nasir expressed confidence that the Election Commission would be able to maintain law and order during the upcoming polls.
He stated that the commission works in close coordination with the police, army, and other agencies, which have always been cooperative and will provide the same support they did in previous elections.
Addressing concerns about potential unrest, the CEC noted that similar fears have surfaced before past elections but the situations ultimately came under control.
"From that experience, I can assure there is nothing to worry about," he said.
Regarding his meeting with the US Charge d'Affaires, the CEC stated the envoy's purpose was to "understand the situation and our level of preparation" for the upcoming February elections.
He confirmed that he briefed the diplomat on the measures the commission has taken.
