Mirza Fakhrul, 65 others acquitted in crude bomb explosion case

A Dhaka court has acquitted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with 65 others, in a case filed over crude bomb explosion.
Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court accepted the police's final report and issued the acquittal order today (21 August), said Additional Public Prosecutor Md Rafiqul Islam Khan.
Among those acquitted are BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury; Vice Chairmen Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Barkat Ullah Bulu; former home minister Altaf Hossain; Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon; BNP chairperson's adviser Zainul Abedin; BNP leader Ishraque Hossain; and International Affairs Secretary Barrister Nasir Uddin, among others.
According to the case statement filed with Ramna Model Police Station, BNP leaders and activists from across the country gathered in Dhaka for a pre-announced grand rally on 28 October 2023. During the programme, they allegedly vandalised vehicles and obstructed police duties in the Ramna area.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Auwal of Ramna Model Police Station lodged the case on 31 October 2023, naming 55 people, including Mirza Fakhrul.
On 21 October last year, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Mamun Hasan, submitted two separate final reports, recommending the acquittal of 65 accused, including Fakhrul.
Later, on 18 December, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court accepted one of the reports, granting acquittal.
The final report under the Explosives Act was subsequently transferred to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court.
