Ministry of Shipping drops Toma Construction from river transport project works
According to the Ministry of Shipping, Toma Construction & Co. Ltd could not deliver as per the contract. The company has so far completed works worth Tk122.33 crore

The Ministry of Shipping has removed Toma Construction and Co. Ltd from civil works of three packages under the Bangladesh Regional Waterway Transport Project-1 (2nd amendment).
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on financial affairs held at the Secretariat yesterday (12 August), chaired by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to secretariat sources, Toma Construction & Co. Ltd was awarded the contracts for the construction of the Pangaon Cargo Terminal and the development and modernisation of the Chandpur and Narayanganj passenger terminals. The company had signed an agreement with the Ministry of Shipping to complete the Tk333.08 crore works within 24 months but failed to meet the deadline.
According to the Ministry of Shipping, Toma Construction & Co. Ltd could not deliver as per the contract. The company has so far completed works worth Tk122.33 crore.
The remaining works worth Tk239.13 crore will now be jointly carried out by SSR International Ltd, Sheltech-Bangla JV and Chakar Construction-The Builders JV.
The project is being implemented with funding from the Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank.
Toma Construction is a concern of Toma Group. According to its website, the chairman of Toma Group is Mohammad Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan (Manik).
Toma Construction has been involved in constructing flyovers, installing railway lines, building food silos and constructing roads under various projects under the Awami League government.
