Nine accused placed on remand over seizure of 1,100 weapons from New Market
Metropolitan Magistrate Abdul Wahab issued the order

A Dhaka court has ordered a three-day remand for nine shop employees arrested in connection with the seizure of more than 1,100 sharp weapons during a raid in the capital's New Market area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Abdul Wahab issued the remand order today (10 August), after a hearing in the case filed under the Arms Act.
The suspects, identified as Shukur Ali, Rokon Mia, Hridoy Mia, Rakib, Swapon, Nur Hossain Limon, Sajjad Ahmed, Ali Akbar, and Sajid Hasan, were arrested following a joint raid yesterday.
The operation, targeting multiple shops and warehouses in the area, led to the recovery of a large cache of sharp weapons including samurai swords, machetes, Chinese axes, local axes, knives and meat hammers.
New Market Police Station Sub-Inspector Pavel Ahmed, the investigating officer in the case, presented the accused before the court seeking a seven-day remand for each.
During the hearing, state prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of the remand, stating that the weapons were openly sold and even rented out in the New Market area, a zone surrounded by numerous educational institutions.
"These weapons were being sold at low prices and made accessible to the public, posing a serious threat to public safety," he said.
In defense, lawyer Abul Kalam Azad appealed for bail and cancellation of the remand.
He argued that such sales have been ongoing for years in various areas and questioned why these longstanding trade practices were only now being targeted.
After hearing both sides, the magistrate granted a three-day remand for each of the nine accused.
