Bangladesh, China advance technical cooperation on water resources

To implement the consensus reached between H.E. Xi Jinping, President of China, and H.E. Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to Bangladesh, during their meeting in Beijing earlier this year, Bangladesh hosted a high-level Chinese technical delegation from July 27 to August 1, 2025.
The visit marked a significant step forward in strengthening water resources cooperation between the two countries.
Mr Xu Zhaoming, Chief Planner of the Changjiang Water Resources Commission (CWRC) under China's Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), led the Chinese delegation, which included senior engineers and experts from CWRC, CISPDR Corporation, and the International Economic & Technical Cooperation and Exchange Centre of the MWR.
On the Bangladesh side, Md Enayet Ullah, Director General of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), received the delegation. Senior officials from the Water Resources Planning Organisation (WARPO), the River Research Institute (RRI), and other technical agencies participated.
During the five-day visit, the delegation inspected critical areas affected by waterlogging, salinity intrusion, pollution, and erosion—including the Buriganga River, Bhabadah in Jashore, and Polder 31 in Khulna's Dacope region. These visits provided valuable insights into Bangladesh's ongoing water management challenges.
On 31 July, a bilateral technical meeting held at Pani Bhaban in Dhaka allowed both sides to exchange views on expanding technical collaboration in water resource planning. They agreed on a shared agenda for sustainable, resilient, and inclusive water management, with particular focus on restoring the Buriganga River.
