Police recovered the hanging body of a young man from a tree near Mukta Pukurpar in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram, three days after he went missing.

The body was discovered around 9:30am today (17 July).

The deceased was identified as Nayon Debnath, 22, son of Babul Debnath from the South Muradpur area of Sitakunda upazila. He had been missing since Monday, according to his family.

Local residents allege that Nayon may have been murdered and then hung from the tree to make it look like a suicide.

They claimed he had recently been under pressure from someone over money. He used to work as a sales assistant at a local shop and had told people in the neighbourhood that someone was threatening him for money. But he never mentioned who it was.

After Nayon went missing, his family searched for him extensively and filed a general diary (GD) with Sitakunda Police Station yesterday (16 July). The next day, his body was found hanging from a tree near Habib Road, close to their home.

Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mojibur Rahman confirmed the recovery of the body.

"We are investigating the matter. Whether it was a case of suicide or murder will be determined after the autopsy," he said.

"An unnatural death case has been filed, and the body has been sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination", he added.
