Describing Gopalganj as a district that remains an integral part of Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has urged the government to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of the leaders of National Citizen Party (NCP) and maintain the law and order situation in the district.

"What is happening in Gopalganj? According to available information, the leadership of NCP had been in prior communication with all levels of the local administration to coordinate and implement their political programme in accordance with established procedures. Such activity falls well within their democratic rights," Shafiqur said in a post on Facebook this afternoon (16 July).

"However, the situation on the ground has reportedly deteriorated. There is clearly a lack of visible presence from the law enforcement agencies, despite the growing tensions.

"The government must act with urgency and take all necessary measures to restore order and ensure public safety," Shafiqur added.

"Failure in doing so would leave the government bearing full responsibility for any consequences that may follow," he further said.

He also urged the locals of Gopalganj to refrain from engaging in any form of disorder or provocation. "We urge all peace-loving, anti-fascist citizens of Bangladesh to remain united and vigilant."
