The newly formed Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit has uncovered revenue evasion worth Tk1,874 crore in the preliminary investigation of tax evasion of 183 individuals and organisations based on intelligence activities in the seven months since December last year.

Tk117.43 crore has already been recovered from 63 individuals and organisations through 231 A-challans and deposited in the state treasury, said the authorities this week.

Despite various adversities, according to the NBR, the newly formed Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit has achieved significant success.

The Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit has completed seven months since the start of its full-fledged activities.

Despite the many limitations of the unit's manpower and logistics as a newly formed organisation, the Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit has been working tirelessly, said officials involved with it.

Since its establishment, this nationally important institution has been playing an exemplary and strong role in uncovering tax evasion and ensuring legal and fair revenue collection by conducting intelligence activities including recovery of lost revenue.

Already, bank accounts of more than a hundred individuals and organisations have been temporarily frozen due to specific tax evasion information, according to the NBR.

The Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit is encouraging taxpayers to pay correct taxes voluntarily and is also sending a clear message to tax evaders and money launderers.

The Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit is committed to taking appropriate action against any kind of tax evasion and acquisition of benami wealth as per the relevant laws.

The journey of the ITIIU in the revenue sector of Bangladesh is an important step from moral, technical and legal aspects.

The success achieved so far proves that the activities of this unit will not only help in revenue recovery, but will also play an effective role in increasing taxpayer compliance and developing tax culture.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR)firmly believes that through fairness and accountability in tax collection, it is possible to eliminate economic inequality along with the overall economic development of the nation.

The NBR strongly believes that the growing capacity, technology reliance, and skilled human resources of the ITIIU will play a significant role in building a strong revenue structure in Bangladesh in the future.
