Mirza Azam, Nanak emailed testimonies over BDR massacre: Investigation commission

The 2009 massacre at the BDR (now BGB) headquarters in Pilkhana was the result of a long-term conspiracy, and evidence suggests involvement of political leaders, the National Independent Investigation Commission claimed today (25 June).
Presenting the progress of its investigation at a press conference held at the Science Laboratory in Dhaka, commission head Major General (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman said, "We have found evidence of involvement of political leaders at various levels at the time."
Awami League leaders Mirza Azam and Jahangir Kabir Nanak also submitted written testimonies to the commission via email, he added.

According to the commission, despite repeated appeals for help from army officers trapped inside Pilkhana during the uprising on 25 and 26 February 2009, no timely rescue operation was conducted.
This inaction by the armed forces and law enforcement agencies allowed the mutineers to carry out killings and other crimes without resistance.
The commission also pointed to negligence by intelligence agencies, a biased role played by some media outlets, and attempts to destroy evidence.
It further stated that possible foreign involvement had emerged during the investigation, which is currently being verified.
In response to a question about the recent three-point movement by dismissed BDR members, the commission said it was aware of the matter but would not comment on any issue currently under judicial consideration.
The commission has applied to extend its deadline for submitting the full report to 30 September 2025.
