One person has been arrested in connection with the public assault and humiliation of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, while efforts are ongoing to identify and detain others involved, according to a statement issued by the Army on their official Facebook page.

On 22 June, a group of around six to seven individuals surrounded the former CEC in Dhaka's Uttara area, assaulted him, and forced a garland of shoes around his neck. The incident was captured on mobile phones and streamed on Facebook, drawing widespread outrage.

Although police were present at the scene, the assault continued until they eventually brought the situation under control and handed Nurul Huda over to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, the local army camp responded promptly. As part of its ongoing drive against mob violence, the army arrested a suspect named Md Hanif on 23 June. He has been handed over to the police.

Authorities confirmed that investigations are progressing and further arrests are expected soon.

The former CEC's detention came just hours after a case was filed by the BNP with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing 24 people of irregularities and bias in conducting the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections.

A Dhaka court on 23 June placed Huda on a four-day remand in a case over election manipulation.
