The Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB) has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation regarding the mob attack and harassment of former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.

"A group of individuals illegally gathered, physically assaulted Nurul Huda by placing a garland of shoes around his neck, and then handed him over to the police. The HRFB is demanding a fair investigation and proper punishment for this incident," said the rights group in a statement issued today (23 June).

It said the organisation firmly believes that any humiliating and violent behaviour occurring outside of the judicial system is not only a violation of individual rights but also a punishable crime under existing laws.

The HRFB emphasises that justifying mob violence in any way is unacceptable. "Instead, it is crucial to prevent such violence, maintain peace, order, and stability in the country, and uphold the rule of law."

The forum notes the serious consequences of mob violence, citing statistics from Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) which indicate that at least 83 citizens have died as victims of such violence as of June this year.

The HRFB finds the interim government's immediate statement regarding the incident inadequate and lacking in responsible behaviour.

The rights body demanded that the government clearly disclose to the public what legal actions have been taken against those responsible for this incident.

Former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda was held by an angry mob in the capital's Uttara area yesterday evening (22 June) and later handed over to police.

The detention came just hours after a case was filed by the BNP at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station last morning, accusing 24 people, including former chief election commissioners, election commissioners and other officials involved in conducting the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections, of irregularities and biased conduct.

A four-member BNP delegation led by National Executive Committee member Salahuddin Khan filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station yesterday.

The complaint named 24 people, including former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda and Kazi Habibul Awal, along with several unidentified persons.
