India has handed over the body of Zakaria Ahmed (23), who was found hanging from a tree inside Indian territory near the Utma border of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet.

Indian police transferred the body to Bangladeshi police this afternoon (20 june). Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF) were present at the time.

Earlier, around 9:30pm on yesterday (19 June), police from Pynursla Police Station in India recovered the body of Zakaria. A preliminary investigation and post-mortem were conducted in India.

The BGB suspects that Zakaria's death was a case of suicide, based on information provided by the BSF and Indian police.

In a press release issued at 11:30pm on yesterday, the BGB's Sylhet Battalion shared this information.

The deceased was the son of Md Alauddin from Lamagram village in Chararbazar, Companiganj upazila. Zakaria used to work as a labourer. He got married last Monday.

Indian police retrieved the body at around 9:30pm on Thursday for further procedures.

Following discussions between the commanding officers of BGB and the BSF, the body was officially handed over to Bangladeshi police in the presence of both forces on Friday afternoon.

According to local sources cited by the BGB, Zakaria may have taken his own life due to mental distress caused by family issues.

Zakaria's father, Alauddin, said that Zakaria had no known issues with anyone. On Wednesday night, they all had dinner together and went to bed. Zakaria left the house around 6am on Thursday. Later, family members were informed by locals that a body was seen hanging from a tree branch with a rope inside Indian territory. Zakaria's family identified the body as his.
