Chattogram Port sets new record in container handling despite adversities

Chattogram Port, the country's main seaport, has set a new record in container handling in  the fiscal 2024-25, despite facing multiple challenges including floods, strikes, and extended holidays.

According to a press release issued by the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) today (16 June), the port handled 31,71,779 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers as of 15 June – already surpassing the total of the previous fiscal year by 4.63%, with 15 days still remaining in the current fiscal year.

In the entire 2023-24 fiscal year, the port handled 31,68,690 TEUs, while the figure was 30,07,375 TEUs in 2022-23.

The CPA attributed the achievement to the support from the ministry, consistent monitoring by the port's board members, and the relentless effort and dedication of port officials and staff.

The authority noted that port operations faced disruptions for nearly two months due to several adversities – including political unrest, prolonged floods, two Eid holidays, customs officers' pen-down strikes, and transport labourers' work stoppages.

Despite these setbacks, the port managed to achieve record-breaking container handling volumes, thanks in part to key developments such as enhanced automation services, the launch of an e-gate pass system, and the modernisation of container operating systems. 

The port also credited container operators and port users for their swift delivery practices, timely communication, and overall cooperation.

The CPA authorities expressed confidence that if the current pace continues, the port is set to reach a new milestone in container handling by the end of the fiscal year on 30 June, 2025.

The authority believes this ongoing success will significantly contribute to propelling the country's trade and commerce to new heights.

'A positive sign for economy' 

Chattogram Port Authority Deputy Secretary (Public Relations) Md Nahid Mostafa told TBS that the record container handling is the outcome of coordinated efforts by the port authority and all stakeholder organisations.

"Despite various challenges, this achievement is undoubtedly a positive sign for Bangladesh's economy. Our target for this fiscal year is to handle 33 lakh TEUs, and we are optimistic about reaching that milestone," Nahid Mostafa said.

Chattogram Customs Agents Association President S M Saiful Alam also termed this success a significant milestone for the port. 

"The port authority is operating in close coordination with all stakeholders, including our association. We, along with other organisations, will continue working together to make port operations even more dynamic in the future," he said.
