Ishraque seeks chief adviser's intervention for oath as Dhaka South mayor

"No development-related department will operate. We don’t want the public to suffer. However, the local government division and its officials are fully responsible for this deadlock,” Ishraque said

BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has called on the chief adviser to intervene and ensure he is sworn in as mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation, in accordance with the court verdict.

Speaking at Nagar Bhaban this morning (15 June) at around 11am, where his supporters have been staging a sit-in, Ishraque said, "We will continue our movement. Although we won't break open the main gate, emergency services like birth registration and waste management will run under our supervision."

"But no development-related department will operate. We don't want the public to suffer. However, the local government division and its officials are fully responsible for this deadlock," he added.

"The government is constitutionally bound to swear me in as mayor as per the court ruling. By not doing so, adviser Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan has violated the Constitution," Ishraque said.

Referring to attempts to hinder the process, the BNP leader said, "When the Election Commission was moving forward with my issue, a group from a party named NCP created a mob in front of the commission. Since then, the commission has been evading responsibility. If they don't like the outcome, they create mobs."

"Not swearing me in legitimises the illegal mayorship of Taposh and the fraudulent elections under Hasina's rule," he added.

Ishraque also said, "The law adviser's recent remarks make it clear the government had decided from the beginning that they wouldn't let me assume office."

"The court verdict proves that the elections under Sheikh Hasina's rule were rigged, with people's victories stolen through fraud," he said.

Calling for a swift resolution, Ishraque said essential services will remain active at the Nagar Bhaban, but the movement will continue.

Former secretary and coordinator of "Amra Dhakabashi", Moshiur Rahman, said, "We have declared Asif unwanted at Nagar Bhaban. We will continue our movement."

BNP leader Ishraque Hossain and his supporters, under the banner of "Amra Dhakabashi", resumed their post-Eid protest by locking the Nagar Bhaban today (15 June), demanding his swearing-in as Dhaka South mayor.
