Cabinet Committee backs direct procurement for Dhaka South canal restoration works
The approval was given at a meeting of the committee after reviewing seven separate proposals submitted by the Local Government Division
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today (24 June) approved a series of proposals to allow the implementation of several canal restoration and beautification works under a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) project through direct procurement from Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited of the Bangladesh Navy.
The approval was given at a meeting of the committee after reviewing seven separate proposals submitted by the Local Government Division.
The proposals relate to different work packages under the ongoing "Canal Restoration, Rehabilitation and Beautification Environment Creation (1st Revised)" project being implemented by DSCC.
Officials said the works form part of a broader initiative to restore and rehabilitate canals within the capital, improve water flow, reduce waterlogging and create a more attractive urban environment.
The Local Government Division placed the proposals before the committee, seeking policy-level approval for the direct procurement method instead of competitive tendering.
After reviewing the proposals, the committee recommended granting policy approval for all seven packages.
The canal restoration project is one of the key urban infrastructure initiatives undertaken by DSCC to recover encroached and degraded waterways, improve drainage capacity and enhance the environmental and aesthetic condition of the city.
The implementation of the packages through the Bangladesh Navy's Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited is expected to facilitate timely completion of the specialised works under the revised project.
