4,500 workers deployed to remove sacrificial animal waste in Gazipur

The Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) has launched an initiative to manage and remove sacrificial animal waste by deploying 4,500 workers in the city.

The waste removal campaign began at 2pm today (7 June) and will continue for three days, according to city corporation officials.

Sources estimate that approximately 1,50,000 animals were sacrificed across the Gazipur district on Eid-ul-Adha today, with more than half of these taking place within the GCC area.

On a regular basis, GCC collects around 100 tonnes of household waste daily. However, during Eid, the amount of waste is expected to more than double due to the massive volume of animal remains and other sacrificial waste.

To tackle this surge, GCC has deployed dump trucks, mini-trucks, compactors, container carriers, payloaders, tire dozers, water trucks, bulldozers, and excavators. Besides GCC's own fleet of 40 vehicles, an additional 70 trucks and trolleys have been hired.

Additionally, each of the city's 57 wards has been supplied with adequate numbers of handcarts, shovels, and waste baskets. Bleaching powder is also being distributed for disinfection. In total, 150,000 biodegradable poly bags and 50 tonnes of bleaching powder have been provided to local mosques across all wards to support waste handling.

Sudip Basak, supervising engineer (mechanical) of GCC, said that the city corporation is committed to completing the waste removal process within the scheduled timeframe.

He also emphasised the importance of public cooperation and urged residents to actively participate in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
