Dr Hasan Mahmud Reza, a professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at North South University (NSU), has been awarded the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) Gold Medal 2024 in the Senior Group category for Biological Sciences.

The award recognises Dr Reza's extensive contributions to scientific research, spanning over 28 years. 

Throughout his academic career, Dr Reza has published 144 scientific papers in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals such as The Lancet, BMJ, Science, JAMA, Scientific Reports, Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, Antioxidants, PLOS One, and Heliyon.

His research covers diverse areas including the molecular and developmental biology of the eye, adult stem cell biology and engineering, pharmacology of natural products, pharmaceutical technology, neuroscience, antimicrobial resistance, and public health.

Dr Reza previously served as the Dean of the School of Health and Life Sciences at NSU and chaired the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was also an editor of the National Guidelines for Regulatory Approvals of Stem Cell and Cell-Based Products (2020).

Dr Reza received his BPharm and MPharm from the University of Dhaka. He later earned his PhD in Biological Sciences from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, under the Monbusho Scholarship. He subsequently joined NAIST's Faculty of Biological Sciences as an assistant professor, where he served for three years.

He also worked as a research scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute under the National University of Singapore, where he specialised in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

In recognition of his academic excellence, Dr Reza has previously been awarded the Researcher Excellence Award (2022), Best Researcher Award (2021), and the Dean's Award (2016) by NSU.

Dr Reza has supervised more than 60 master's theses and over 170 undergraduate research projects. He is currently involved in collaborative research with institutions such as Yale University, Sam Houston State University, Nottingham University, Royal Holloway – University of London, NAIST, and several local universities.

He is an active member of more than 10 professional and social organisations, including the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh (PCB).
