Asaduzzaman Asad, a former member of parliament for Rajshahi-3, was denied parole to attend his mother's funeral but was allowed to see her face one last time at the Rajshahi Central Jail gate last night (2 June).

"On humanitarian grounds, permission was granted for him to view his mother's face one final time at the prison gate," Senior Jail Superintendent Shah Alam Khan told The Business Standard.

Asaduzzaman, a former general secretary of the Awami League's Rajshahi District unit, was elected to parliament for the first time in the 12th national election.

He was arrested on 5 August last year following the fall of the Awami League government and has since been held at Rajshahi Central Jail.

His mother, Saleha Begum, passed away yesterday afternoon (2 June) at the age of 80. Family members said they had applied to the district's deputy commissioner for his release on parole so he could attend her funeral.

However, due to security concerns, the application was denied. Instead, authorities allowed a brief moment at the jail gate for Asaduzzaman to pay his last respects.

Asaduzzaman hails from Lakshmipur Bhatapara in Rajshahi city and is one of seven siblings. Five of the brothers are involved in Awami League politics.

Asaduzzaman remains in prison, while four of his brothers are reportedly in hiding and could not attend their mother's funeral either.

Only the third son, Akhtaruzzaman, is not involved in politics and works as a car driver.

Family members said Akhtaruzzaman visited their home in the afternoon to see their mother for the last time. Still, due to safety concerns, he, too, could not attend the namaj-e-janaza (funeral prayer).
