An expatriate's family was robbed at gunpoint on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Tangail's Mirzapur upazila early today (31 May).

The incident occurred around 2:30am in the Kurni area of the highway, said Police.

During the robbery, helper of a highway police wrecker was injured when the robbers opened fire while fleeing the scene.

Adnan Mostafiz, additional superintendent of police of Mirzapur Circle, said, "Filing of a case is in process. The microbus has been seized. An operation to arrest the robbers is ongoing."

According to police and local sources, Beauty Akhter, an expatriate from Jordan, was returning home to Sariakandi in Bogura with her family from the airport in a microbus.

As their vehicle reached Kurni, another microbus blocked its path. Armed robbers stopped the vehicle and looted cash, mobile phones, and other valuables from the passengers.

At that time, members of the highway police noticed the two stationary microbuses and approached. Sensing their presence, the robbers opened fire indiscriminately.

One of the bullets struck Tuhin Mia, 28, a helper of the highway police wrecker, injuring his wrist.

He was later admitted to Kumudini Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the robbers abandoned their microbus and fled the scene. Police have since seized the vehicle used by the gang.

The incident has sparked concern among passengers and transport workers, particularly in light of recent highway robberies.
