A Chattogram court has imposed a travel ban on former expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister Nurul Islam, his wife Sanoara Begum, and their five sons in connection with a Tk13.37 crore loan default case.

Judge Md Helal Uddin of the Chattogram Money Loan Court passed the order yesterday (26 May), following a case filed by Eastern Bank's Agrabad branch, according to court sources.

According to the case document, the loan was taken under the name of Sanowara Dairy Foods Ltd on 5 February 2020, without collateral, but based on personal guarantees from the family members.

In addition, Nurul Islam and his family are facing multiple ongoing cases for defaulting on Tk30.53 crore from Uttara Bank and Tk27 crore from Shahjalal Islami Bank. Previous court orders have already restricted the transfer of their assets.

In 2016, Sanowara Drinks and Beverage Industries — linked to the family — was fined Tk10 lakh by a mobile court operated by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for producing ice cream with expired ingredients.

The raid led to the destruction of 145kg of expired strawberry topping, dark compound chocolate, and 20kg of honey.

Nurul Islam was elected as a member of parliament for Chattogram-8 in 2008. He served as a technocrat minister in the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment from 14 July 2015 to 6 November 2018.
