Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, son of former Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, staged a protest today (14 May), demanding his immediate swearing-in as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

They gathered under the banner of Dhakabashi (residents of Dhaka) and formed a human chain in front of the city corporation building at around 8:30am.

According to media reports, retired senior secretary Moshiur Rahman announced the sit-in.

"Despite a court verdict and a gazette notification from the Election Commission, some individuals in the interim government are stalling the transfer of responsibilities to the people's elected mayor, Ishraque," he said.

"As he is yet to be sworn in, we are launching a nonstop sit-in, starting Thursday [today]," he added.

Ishraque Hossain, a member of the BNP's foreign affairs committee, was declared mayor of Dhaka South by the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Electoral Tribunal on 27 March this year. The Election Commission subsequently issued a gazette on 27 April, officially recognising him as mayor.
