France protests turn violent as mass arrests and curfews spread across major cities
France is facing widespread riots, violent protests, and growing political pressure as authorities impose curfews and investigate thousands of arrests. The unrest has caused extensive property damage, including a devastating fire at the historic Limoges city hall.
President Emmanuel Macron has rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez's resignation after the minister admitted that police temporarily lost control in some cities. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu faces political criticism as investigations continue and a state of emergency remains under consideration.
More than 2,500 people have been arrested, around 1,000 police officers have been injured, and over 2,000 businesses have been affected. The government has also announced partial unemployment support for affected workers and proposed legislation requiring those responsible for damage to pay for repairs.
