Formation of Ducsu Election Commission imminent, code of conduct ready
The commission was scheduled to be formed in the first half of May and work is currently progressing towards that objective, as per the election timeline published in mid-April

A key step has been taken towards the long-sought Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election, as the university administration confirms the possibility of forming the Ducsu Election Commission soon.
According to the timeline published in mid-April, the commission was scheduled to be formed by mid-May. Once constituted, it will formally begin the election process.
"We are considering names of individuals who can connect with students and ensure a fair election," said Sayma Haque Bidisha, DU pro vice-chancellor (administration).
While students earlier favoured a commission jointly formed with teachers and students, Bidisha clarified that students will not be included, though their suggestions will be considered once the commission is in place.
The Ducsu constitution and election code of conduct have been finalised.
Code of conduct
The code of conduct for the upcoming Ducsu elections lays out clear guidelines to ensure a fair and orderly process. Rallies or processions are prohibited during the collection and submission of nomination papers, with candidates limited to five supporters.
Also, no individual, group, or student organisation can obstruct another candidate during the nomination or withdrawal process.
To maintain peace on election day, vehicles are banned from transporting voters or participating in processions, though rickshaws and bicycles are permitted for commuting to polling stations. The distribution of food, drinks, gifts, or tips to voters is strictly forbidden throughout the campaign period and on election day.
Campaigning is allowed only after the final candidate list is published and ends 24 hours before election day, between the hours of 10am and 11pm. Microphone use is restricted after 10pm.
External participants are not allowed to campaign on campus; only Ducsu and hall union candidates and voters can engage in election activities. Organisers must request permission at least 24 hours in advance for meetings or gatherings, with each candidate permitted one projection meeting per hall and up to three across the university.
All events must take place at designated locations approved by the returning officers. Violations of the code may lead to disqualification and fines of up to Tk20,000, as well as expulsion or other legal actions.
Reforms in constitution
The newly amended Ducsu constitution introduces significant reforms, including the formal recognition of the 2024 mass uprising. Two new sub-sections have been added under Section 2: Sub-section 2(b) aims to uphold the spirit of the July 2024 uprising against discrimination and fascism, while preserving the legacy of democratic movements in Bangladesh's history. Sub-section 2(c) focuses on promoting excellence in both academic and co-curricular pursuits among students.
Roles such as the secretary for Struggle for Independence and Liberation War Affairs have been redefined, and the previous clause limiting legal action against election decisions has been removed.
